The GM Environment formulates strategy, implements environmental programs, directs a team of professionals and is responsible for about C$ 6.5M operational and C$ 2M capital budget.
This role has overall accountability for leading the continuous improvement of environmental and sustainable development performance with Company Standards, Legislative and Community requirements and the 5 year strategic business plan to ensure:
• The implementation, review and improvement of standardized, consistent and effective environment and work management systems, procedures and standards across all sites.
• Provision of guidance, governance and oversight of skills and professional development for all environmental staff.
• Influence, collaborate and consult effectively with key leadership and operational roles in the business to achieve improvements in environmental performance.
• Develop and manage solutions to major environmental challenges and legislation, i.e. upcoming clean air and greenhouse gas regulations and cap and trade systems.
• Ensure compliance with all Federal and Provincial environment legislation such as Federal Metal Mining Effluent Regulations.
• Develop and implement Company’s Sustainable Development Plan and regularly update Company’s closure plan.

• Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental plan in consultation with Senior Management, aligned with Company.
• Ensure the Climate Change Strategy is considering Company and the relevant changing political and technical landscape and its associated plans are on track to reducing the business energy and hence the Carbon Footprint. Work directly with operations to support them with energy efficiency in their processes.
• Provide resources and advice to apply the key aspects of the Water Strategy at Company and investigate opportunities for water efficiency and associated environmental impact reduction.
• Ensure operations meet both the Company and Government requirements for mine and Facility Closure.
• Provide leadership and administrative support for HSEQ MS and Assurance to the operations
• Provide direct support to the management and leadership team on all aspects related to the effective and consistent implementation, review, improvement and communication of environmental Standards and Systems in line with Company HSE and climate change strategy and associated plans.
• Consistently and effectively implement and continuously improve ISO 14001 and Company Environmental Standards and ensure system alignment with Company HSEQ MS requirements.
• Manage and apply audit and assurance methodologies to ensure standards are applied effectively; and assist in developing interventions and solutions to resolve any non-conformances.
• Ensure the provision of standard data and information that enables effective analysis of issues and trends and development of a proactive approach to managing environmental impacts.
• Provide sound leadership for a small team of professionals.
• Act as Company’s management representative internally, as well as with external stakeholders, i.e. federal and provincial government agencies

The General Manager Environment must be able to:
• Assist Company operations to achieve environmental performance targets (energy and water usage, CO2 emissions, etc)
• Demonstrate strong personal and professional environmental leadership - through HSE interactions, observations, effective influencing and internal consulting and through the engagement of team members.
• Deliver environmental improvements and initiatives through identification of leading practices, LEAN and other methodologies.
• Ensure succession planning and development of team members.
• Develop strong, sustainable and effective relationships with key stakeholders at all levels, i.e. government agencies.

College/University Education:
Bachelor degree in environmental engineering, science or related discipline
